Grammarly Review – Is It Worth It?

Whether you are a content writer or you tend to write a lot of emails to keep track of your projects, you’ve probably heard of Grammarly before. The service has been around for a couple of years and it’s become more and more popular.

But is Grammarly Premium worth it? What are the Grammarly costs that you have to manage when you opt for a premium account? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this Grammarly review

Grammarly Premium Review

First of all, who should consider using Grammarly and what can it do for you? The ideal users of this service are the following:

  • Bloggers
  • Students
  • Content marketers or copywriters
  • Professionals who write anything, from reports and presentations to emails

There are two versions – a free one and a paid one. While the free one covers some of the basics, such as grammar, spelling, and punctuation, the premium one gives you more detailed info on the same types of errors, but also more.

For example, the premium makes it possible for you to check your text plagiarism. I have been a premium user of Grammarly for over four years now and I have to say that this is perhaps the most useful features it comes with.

We’re not going to put together a Grammarly plagiarism checker review, but we will say that it does help you in this sense. Plus, a yearly subscription allows you to check around 300,000 words per month for plagiarism, which can’t be said about other services.

For instance, with Copyscape and other programs, you have to pay for every plagiarism check. No matter how affordable the checks might be, they definitely add up and if you create a lot of content, you might pay the value of a Grammarly subscription for just a couple of months of checks with similar services.

Grammarly App Review

What’s also neat about Grammarly is that it comes in several forms. For example, you can install a Grammarly extension to your Google Chrome browser, you can integrate it into Google Docs, or you can use the mobile or web version.

You can use the extension as you write in your content management system, too. However, most of the time, if you copy and paste the text into a Grammarly document, it will most often give you detailed information about your errors and about what you should do in the future.

In terms of grammar and punctuation, the app is capable of detecting both basic and advanced errors – comma splices, fragments, run-on sentences, and a lot more. As for spell check, the app checks every word in your writing for errors.

We’ve already mentioned that the plagiarism feature is one of the handiest ones, but the best thing about the app is that it tells you even when you risk copy-striking content just by using common expressions. Ideally, your content should be under 5% plagiarism to be on the safe side of things.

Last, but not least, Grammarly also tells you what writing style you have adopted in your content. Additionally, it offers you suggestions, tips, and advice to improve your style over time. In a nutshell, the service tells you how readable your document is and how you can take it to another level.

Grammarly Pricing

The annual subscription is by far the most convenient one, especially for individuals who do a lot of writing.

You’ll pay $29.95 per month, $19.98 per month if you opt for the quarterly plan (billed as one payment of $59.95), or $11.66 for the annual plan (billed as one payment of $139.95).

There are business plans available, too, if you run a content marketing agency and there are many people using the same account.

One detail that we would like to add here is that, if you use the same personal account with several other individuals and you check over 300,000 words per month, the app will automatically disable the plagiarism content for a limited time.

Grammarly Pros and Cons

No matter the type of app or extension you use, whether web or mobile, you’ll notice that Grammarly is extremely easy to utilize. The platform is user-friendly and it tells you everything you should work on in the same place.

Another advantage is the pricing, especially if you’re looking to get the plagiarism feature. It’s also quite versatile since you can use it as a web tool, browser extension, downloadable desktop app, or Microsoft Word add-in.

Even though some people might say that Grammarly sucks, the platform has been improved significantly over the years. And if you are working on something important, you can even send your text to an editing professional inside the app (for a cost, of course) to have it checked by a human.

Here are several cons to keep in mind.

  • The free version is quite limited
  • They send perhaps too many newsletters (you can opt out)
  • It doesn’t work on every platform yet
  • It might seem expensive

There are many alternatives to Grammarly these days, but we have found them to be either pricy by comparison or less user-friendly. Almost no proofreading app or service offers you the info that you need for free, so you will have to consider getting the premium version no matter what editing software you will choose.

Here are a few Grammarly alternatives you could consider.

  • WhiteSmoke
  • ProWritingAid
  • Ginger
  • Slick Write
  • Hemingway App
  • 1Checker
  • OnlineCorrection
  • PaperRater

Is Grammarly Premium Worth It?

We decided to review Grammarly not only because it is one of the most popular editing pieces of software out there, but also because lots of people ask themselves whether they should pay around $140 per year for the service.

The answer to this question is that it all depends on your specific needs. If you tend to do a lot of writing, no matter the type of content that you produce, you should consider getting the premium version.

If, on the other hand, you write only emails once in a while and you’re not creating content and being paid for it, you could stick to the free version for as long as possible.
