Link Building Strategies

Acquiring links should always be an important part of your SEO strategy, whether you like it or not. Unfortunately, the number and quality of links that you get to point to your website is still an important ranking factor, even though most search engines aren’t keen on admitting it.

In this post, we’re looking at several effective link building strategies that you can use to your advantage and that aren’t going to cost you a fortune or give you (too many) headaches.

Link building strategies for SEO

Forum and blog posts comments

While this one is definitely not one of the many advanced link building strategies you might want to try, the truth is that forums are still a good place to start. Depending on your niche, you can also use them for building relationships with other influencers or site owners, which might at some point link to your website or blog.

The downside to getting forum or blog post links would be that they are rarely ‘dofollow’. However, it’s always good to have a mix of both ‘nofollow’ and ‘dofollow’ links, especially if they are relevant. The combination makes you appear more authentic in search engines’ eyes.

Guest blogging

If you keep your guest blogging links relevant, you can definitely improve your rankings using this tactic, even if Google frowns upon it. Ideally, you should avoid paying for the posts, but we all know that sponsored posts exist and pretty much everyone expects at least a low fee for offering a backlink.

Web directory links

Directory links can still be pretty valuable, but you have to be super careful to get your own in a directory that’s relevant to your niche. For example, if you’re in the pet niche, you should ideally look for directories somehow related to pets.

If you have a location-based business, you can look for directories that are region-specific.

Give a testimonial

If you’re a pretty well-known professional in your space and you have nothing against endorsing the tools you use, you can always have a testimonial showcased on the tool’s website. Here’s an example for AMZ Watcher:

Replace dead links with your own

You can use any SEO tool like Ahrefs or SEMRush to find dead links in your niche.

You can look at the backlinks that your competitors have acquired and then investigate those domains, find the broken links, tell the webmasters about the issue, and suggest an article that you published and that’s better than what the dead link included using Wayback Machine.

Skyscraper Technique: How To Create Content That Attracts Backlinks

The Skyscraper technique

This technique is extremely well-known, but it’s not as effective as some of the others we’ve showcased here. The issue with it is that the Internet is literally overflowing with content right now, so in order to create a better piece, you have to do your best.

Once you’ve put together a better post than the one you have found has received many links, you can reach out to the individuals who have used it as a resource and ask them whether they wouldn’t prefer to link to yours since it’s better and newer.

Content roundups

Some websites send out newsletters where every week, they recommend several articles that they consider interesting to read by their regular visitors. If you can get listed on one of the roundup pages, you will be getting a link for free.

The easy way to find roundup sites is to use the search engine of your choice for “keyword + weekly roundup” queries. The challenge with using this method is that these bloggers or webmasters get dozens, if not hundreds of emails every week or even every day, depending on their sites’ popularity.

You somehow have to make your own email stand out and pitch a really good piece of content to get included in their roundup.
